City Council

Kingston city council has approved a major makeover for Breakwater Park…the park along the King Street waterfront.

The 5.4 million dollar project has received half a million dollars from Lake Ontario Water Keepers and is in line for a million dollars from the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program.

The work will include new pathways, shade areas and a sand beach along the parks west end.

Work will soon resume on the Front Road Bridge after city council approved a 1.8 million dollar contract to complete the work.

The city fired the previous contractor and work was halted last year.

Last night city council voted in favour of the city negotiating a contract with RW Tomlinson to complete work on the south side of the bridge.

Fentanyl – Kingston

Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington Public Health issued its warning about fentanyl laced drugs after a man died last week and six others suffered overdoses believed to be caused by fentanyl.

Associate Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Kieran Moore, says he heard late Friday pills similar to the ones circulating in Ottawa that caused two deaths were potentially present in the Kingston area.  That’s when he decided to issue the alert.

Moore says there’s also a brand of heroin being sold in the area called…blue heroin…and officials believe it also contains fentanyl.

Sentence – Sexual Assault

A 40 year old Kingston area man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for sexually assaulting a women in a shed on Wolfe Island.

Michael Burnett had met the woman at a shelter in the winter of 2015 and the two went to Wolfe Island.

Burnett was convicted of forcible confinement, sexual assault, and assault causing bodily harm.

He’s already spent 15 months in jail and will serve just over 8 years in prison.

International Women’s Day

It’s International Women’s Day.

It was first celebrated in 1945. The symbols for International Women’s Day are bread and roses. Bread is for women’s struggle for economic equality while roses represent women’s continuing efforts for a better quality of life.

People will be breaking bread at an International Women’s Day luncheon in Kingston today hosted by the Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce, Kingston Economic Development Corporation and Women Mean Business Professional Network of Eastern Ontario.

Transformix Engineering President and CEO Pen-Sang Cau is the guest speaker at the luncheon in the Ambassador Hotel and Conference Centre.

Hospice Kingston

Hospice Kingston is hosting a town hall meeting tonight to share its vision and plans for Kingston’s first residential hospice.

The meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club west end location in the Frontenac Mall.

The organization wants to build a 10 bed Hospice and Palliative Care Centre of Excellence on the Sisters of Providence Property on Princess Street near Sir. John A. Macdonald Boulevard.

It has launched a capital campaign to raise $7.8 million.

Frontenac County

The designer of the logo and branding for Frontenac County has won the 2017 Applied Arts Community Award for Logo and Brand Identity Design. The announcement was published in the March issue of the Applied Arts Magazine.

Jon Allison of RedTrain collaborated with Kathleen Vollebregt of Avenue Strategy on the branding that includes the hashtag:

#InFrontenac.

It’s the second major national marketing award for the #InFrontenac brand.

Utilities Kingston – Water Outage

Utilities Kingston will be shutting off the water to approximately 200 homes and businesses today while it installs a district water meter on Sydenham Road.

The outage is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today.
