10 Year Old – Good Samaritan

A Kingston girl who found $900 in cash earlier this year is giving the money away instead of using it for herself.

Kingston Police say the Good Samaritan is 10 year old Ailsa.  Ailsa found the cash in May when she was walking home in Kingston’s east end.  She turned it over to Kingston Police and nobody claimed the cash.  Police returned it to Ailsa yesterday.  She told them she will be donating it to a youth shelter and an animal rescue facility.

Drug Bust – Westport Man

A man from Westport is facing drug trafficking charges after police stopped his pickup truck at Unity Road and Westbrook Road Wednesday afternoon.

Police say he’d been under surveillance and officers seized a quantity of what’s believe to be heroin.  The truck was impounded and police dog Zeus sniffed out $6,000 worth of crystal meth, Fentanyl patches and hydromorphone pills hidden in the dashboard stereo.

37 year old Lawrence Leadbeater has face drug trafficking charges and other charges including breach of probation.

Queen’s – Nothing to See Here

It turned out to be a false alarm.

A large number of Kingston Police officers were scrambled to a Queen’s University residence after a student reported a violent incident in his dorm room.

Police swarmed the building around 5am yesterday.  They woke some residents before determining nothing had actually taken place and nobody was ever in any danger.  Police say no charges will be laid.

Library to Close

The Central Branch of the Kingston Frontenac Public Library is about to undergo a lengthy multi-million dollar renovation.  The downtown library will close after tomorrow and isn’t slated to re-open until the spring of 2018.

A storefront branch will be open at 209 Wellington Street during renovations and programming for children and families has been relocated to Artillery Park and the Tett Centre.  The price tag for the renovation is $14 million.

United Way

The United Way campaign in Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington wraps up on Wednesday morning of next week and it has just over $300,000 to go to reach its goal of $3,451,000.

Empire Life is donating $175,000 to the local campaign.  The money comes from employees and retirees.  The company matched their donations dollar for dollar.
