Peace Medal

The winner of this year’s YMCA of Kingston Peace Medal is being recognized for helping develop a better understanding between Muslims and non-Muslims in Kingston.   The Y says Mohamed Bayoumi has made a significant contribution towards peace-building through his work with the Islamic Society of Kingston.  Bayoumi taught electrical and computer engineering at Queen’s for 30 years and is now retired.

Healthy City

A health care expo with a difference is taking place today in Kingston.

Healthy City Ontario at the Rogers K-Rock Centre is sponsored by two doctors groups – the Ontario Medical Association and Kingston Academy of Medicine.  It’s being used to promote opposition to Bill 41 – Ontario’s new Patients First Act.  The free event also features booths with health information and question and answer sessions with doctors and specialists.  It’s open to the public from 11am to 6pm.

Impaired Driver – Highway 15

A Kingston man is facing an impaired driving charge after a pickup truck collided with a van on Highway 15 near Sutherland Drive.

Six members of a family were in the minivan.  They were transported to hospital by ambulance for treatment of injuries following the crash around 7:30 Sunday night.

41 year-old Steven Murray has been charged with driving with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in his blood.

Impaired Driver – Bath Road

A 29 year old Kingston man has been charged with impaired driving after a pickup truck hit a utility pole on Bath Road at Frontenac Secondary School.  The crash took place around 10:30 Sunday night.  When police arrived the driver was gone.

Police were contacted by a homeowner on Roosevelt Drive about 45 minutes later and they found their suspect hiding in a backyard shed which was full of pests.You can also contact experts from pest control montreal as they can help you to control pests in your backyard.

Kingston Mills – Bridge Work

Parks Canada says work on the Kingston Mills Swing and Fixed Bridge project is on schedule.  The old fixed bridge has been demolished and the concrete footings and other things that form the base of the new bridge have been built.  Contractors will be installing the support beams this week.  Work on the swing bridge is also well underway.  The project started in September and is scheduled for completion by mid-May of the new year.

Queen’s Student – Rhodes Scholar

A Queen’s University Political Studies and Gender Studies student has been selected as one of 11 Canadians to receive a 2017 Rhodes Scholarship.  Claire Gummo will be pursuing a Master of Philosophy in Comparative Social Policy at Oxford University in England.

Gummo has already made her mark in Kingston by leading a team that has trained more than 2,000 students in ways to prevent sexual violence.  The Calgary native is also a research assistant at the Centre for International and Defence Policy at Queen’s and a gender consultant to NATO.

She’s an avid figure skater and has coached skaters in Kingston and Calgary.
