401 Closed

 

The 401 was closed this morning at Gananoque following a multi-vehicle crash that resulted in a large fire.

The OPP responded to the scene of the crash at 5:40 this morning.

There was no word from police this morning on whether the crash resulted in any injuries.

The crash resulted in the closure of the 401 in both directions.

 

Downtown Kingston – High Rise Development

 

The proposed Capitol Condo project and a report on its economic and environmental benefits will be discussed at the regular board of directors meeting of the Downtown Kingston Business Improvement Area tonight.

Downtown Kingston Manager Doug Ritchie says the research indicates downtown is the right place for the project.  He says it indicates the site needs to be located in a walkable commercial district, near a major employment zone, and on the primary public transit routes.

The report will be presented tonight by consultant Kathryn Wood.

 

Public Policy – Queen’s

 

Queen’s University has appointed a former deputy minister of Finance Canada to lead the Principal’s Commission on the Future of Public Policy at Queen’s University.

Michael Horgan has more than 30 years of public service experience and graduated from Queen’s with an MA in 1979.

The commission will conduct a broad review to determine how Queen’s can modernize its approach to public policy.

Principal Daniel Woolf says he’s confident it will develop recommendations for a renewed strategic purpose and vision for Queen’s in the field of public policy.

 

Girl Arrested

 

A 17-year-old homeless girl who was arrested wandering the halls of a downtown hotel has been charged after police found a large machete in her duffel bag.

She’s been charged with possession of a dangerous weapon – a machete in a duffle bag she says she had for her protection.  She’s also charged with obstructing police by giving a false name and breach of an undertaking from charges of theft and possession of stolen property in Brockville.

The sad part – police say they’re hopeful concerns for her safety and mental well-being will be addressed during the court process.

 

Suit Up

 

The KEYS Job Centre is holding its annual Dress for Success event today.

Clothing donated by the Moore’s Canadian Suit drive, women’s clothing stores and individuals is available along with consultants to help men and women put together a job winning outfit.

The Suit Up boutique will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 845 Princess Street.

 

Lotto Win

 

A group of 39 people from Eastern Ontario has travelled to Toronto to pick up the cheque after winning the guaranteed $1 Million Prize in the Lotto 6-49 draw back on April 30th.

The winners will each get just over $25,641.

The group includes residents of Napanee, Bath, Shannonville, Belleville Marysville, Picton and Stirling.

This winning ticket was purchased at the Petro Canada on County Road 41 in Napanee.

 

Bass Tournament

 

A major bass tournament is taking place in the Kingston area starting today.

The Bass Federation Eastern Division Championship is taking place at Treasure Island Marina today, tomorrow and Friday.  Boats take off at 7:00 am and live weigh-in takes place at 3:00 pm each day.

The tournament features the top 12 anglers from Ontario, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.

Tourism Kingston estimates the economic impact of the tournament at $800,000.
