Planning Meeting – Capitol Condo

The controversy over high rise development in downtown Kingston has been amplified by a split vote by members of the city’s planning committee.  The committee met last night to consider a proposal from IN8 Developments of Waterloo for a 15 storey condominium on the site of the former Capitol Theatre.

The vote was 3 in favour and 3 opposed.  The proposal will now go to city council without a recommendation from the planning committee.  The developer is optimistic council will approve the 15 storey building.

Napanee Arrest – Kamloops Murder

A man from British Columbia wanted for second degree murder has been arrested in Napanee.  Kamloops RCMP say 54-year-old David Miller was taken into custody in Napanee on Thursday morning. He is wanted in connection with the death of 52-year-old Debra Novacluse. Her body was found in a motel room in Kamloops on Saturday.

Music Equipment – Arrests

Kingston police say two men are facing charges after an investigation into the theft of almost 50-thousand dollars in musical equipment.  High end music equipment belonging to Limestone Music was stolen from a Hickson Avenue storage facility.

Police were able to find their suspects by determining a rented U-Haul trailer was used to transport the equipment to a storage locker on Terry Fox Drive.

All of the equipment, except for two guitar amplifiers and three cymbals, was found in that storage locker.

A 36-year-old Kingston man and a 47-year-old man from Inverary have been charged with break and enter, theft over five-thousand dollars and possession of stolen property over five-thousand dollars.

Police Funding – Queen’s

Queen’s University is continuing its tradition of contributing money to the city for extra duty for Kingston Police.

Principal Daniel Woolf announced yesterday the university will contribute $100,000 a year over the next three years to support Kingston Police community policing efforts.

The money will help cover the extra cost of policing major events like Homecoming.

Move In Day

Students are returning to Kingston by the thousands.

Sunday is the official “Move in Day” at Queen’s.  More than 4,000 first year students will move into university residences.  Several streets in the move in zone around the university campus will be closed and others will have traffic re-directed on Sunday.

Limestone City Car Show

A fund raising effort in memory of a woman who passed away at age 35 from melanoma is taking place tomorrow at Lake Ontario Park.  The Limestone City Care Club is hosting its 4th annual Car Show from 8am to 4pm.  All proceeds will go to the Kingston Melanoma Cancer Clinic at Kingston General Hospital in memory of Melanie Beatty.  There’s no admission fee for spectators.
