Rooftop Rescue

There was a rooftop rescue in downtown Kingston early this morning.

Kingston Fire and Rescue had to use a ladder truck to access a roof behind the Chown parking garage to rescue a woman who was injured around 12:40 a.m.

A news release says a female patient had suffered injuries to her leg while going from roof to roof.  She was brought to the ground by firefighters and taken to hospital by paramedics.

Hip Day – Market Square Broadcast

August 20th will be The Tragically Hip Day in Kingston and the city will broadcast the Hip’s final concert on their Man Machine Poem tour on a big screen in Springer Market Square.

City council gave the official approval to the plan at its meeting last night and approved spending up to $150,000 on the celebrations.

George – Apology

Councillor Kevin George will not be sanctioned by city council over violating its code of contact when he got into a dispute with Westbrook residents opposed to secondary suites in new homes.

George failed to point out a conflict of interest.  He worked for a company hired by the developer.

City council accepted his apology last night.

George says he’ll serve out the final two years of his term and won’t run for re-election.

Council – Airport Expansion

City council has approved issuing a request for proposals for the 16 million dollar expansion of Norman Rogers Airport.

The vote was 7-6 in favour of moving forward with the project to expand the airport terminal and lengthen a runway.

The city is spending $281,000 for a consulting company to oversee the expansion.

Construction could begin in about a year.

Tree Watering

Kingston will start watering trees during drought conditions.

City councillor Peter Stroud brought forward a motion last night recommending city staff water trees on city property.  City council approved the motion and staff will water trees when needed at a cost of up to $60,000 a week. Stroud had wanted trees watered once a week – but says he trusts the judgment of staff.

Cold Case – Call of Tipster

The Kingston Police Major Crime Unit is hoping a person who gave any anonymous tip about one of 12 outstanding cold case homicides will contact them again.  Police won’t say what homicide is involved.

Detective Sergeant Brian Pete has issued a statement saying they were contacted in October of last year and after working on information from the tipster – they are hoping the person will contact them again.

Pete is asking the person to contact him using a dummy e-mail account, unidentified phone number or through Crime Stoppers.

Huff Post Poll – Kingston

Kingston is ranked 6th on a Huffington Post top 10 list of Canada’s Best Cities For Jobs AND Affordable Homes.

The publication says the cities on the list are the best when it comes to getting jobs and finding an affordable home.  It lists Kingston’s jobless rate at 6.3% and says Kingston jumped 12 spots on BMO’s labour market report card in the past year, thanks to a .9-per-cent increase in new jobs.

Regina is ranked first with Edmonton and Windsor next on the list.
