Sudden Death

Kingston Police has confirmed it is assisting the coroner in a sudden death investigation at a home on Ordnance Street…but isn’t saying anything else this morning.

The following information has been confirmed through reliable sources and witnesses.

Police were called to 178 Ordnance Street because of concerns about the well-being of the 90 year old man who lived in the home.  He hadn’t been seen for about a month.

Hundreds of flies could be seen on the inside of the windows of the house and the lawn hadn’t been cut.

Police arrived at the home around 8 last night.  They took a woman, believed to be the man’s daughter, out of the house in handcuffs and the forensic unit was then called in to investigate.

Drug Raids

Fourteen people have been arrested in a series of drug raids across Southern Ontario following an investigation by Durham Regional Police and Kingston Police.

No search warrants were executed in Kingston.

The 16 raids in communities from Belleville to Mississauga were related to an investigation into street-level in drug-trafficking in Durham Region.

Police uncovered a drug lab in the Toronto area.  They also seized two handguns, four long guns, cocaine, hash, marijuana, cash and a number of vehicles.

Inmate – Arrest

The inmate who took off from Joyceville Institution on Wednesday was arrested in the Amherstview area around 12:30 yesterday afternoon.

Roger Strome was arrested by the OPP on the train tracks in the area of Taylor Kidd Boulevard and County Road 6.  He has been returned to Joyceville where he’ll face charges.

Distracted Driving

A survey of drivers in Kingston has found about 2% of them are addicted to their cell phones.

Kingston Partners for a Safe Community held two checkpoints yesterday and observed 3,787 drivers.  63 were seen using their hand-held phones.

The group says that a very small increase over a similar survey last year.

98.3% of drivers were obeying the law this year…down .2 percent from last year.

Gunboat Weekend

It’s gunboat weekend in the Village of Bath.

Things kick off with an educational day for school children today.

Displays, boats and re-enactments will take place tomorrow.

A gunboat battle on Saturday at dusk will feature cannons, fireworks and a historical re-enactment.

On Sunday there’s a re-enactment of an 1812 attack by U.S. ships on the Kingston Harbour.

Cycling Map

A cycling map featuring 13 routes and over 600 kilometres for riding has been released in time for the South Frontenac Cycle Festival.

The map was developed by Frontenac County in collaboration with South Frontenac Rides and KFL&A Public Health.

It is available online at frontenacmaps.ca.

The Cycle Festival will be held at Prince Charles Public School in Verona this Sunday.

United Way

Volunteers will be doing light construction, gardening and maintenance task in Kingston today as part of the United Way Day of Caring.  220 volunteers from 24 workplaces will be doing work at 25 local agencies today.

The object of the day is to connect the volunteers with the community programs supported by the United Way.  They’ll wrap up the day with a barbecue at the CFB Kingston Junior Ranks Mess.
