Silo Rescue

A 53 year old farmer has been rescued from a grain silo on Haig Road in Leeds and Thousand Islands Township by Kingston Firefighters.

Kingston Fire and Rescue responded to a mutual aid call yesterday morning – sending a pumper, a ladder truck and its technical rescue team to the farm.

The farmers brother had gone into the silo to try and help him get out but wasn’t able to.

Two firefighters went into the silo and brought the 2 men out by ladder.

The farmer who was trapped was treated by paramedics.

New High School

People still hope Kingston city council will ask staff to prepare a report on using the Memorial Centre property as the site for Kingston’s new high school – but the Limestone District School Board is moving ahead with plans to build the $36 million school on the QECVI property.

The board met last night and heard that if the project goes ahead at QE – the old high school will have to be torn down in the summer of 2016.

That would mean students would have to attend other schools while the new one is being built.

New Casino Operator

A group headed by B-C’s Great Canadian Gaming has won the right to operate Thousand Islands casino, the slots at Kawartha Downs and build new gaming and entertainment facility in Belleville

The Ontario Gaming East partnership will pay 37.4 million dollars cash and another 13 million dollars for operating expenses in return for a 20-year agreement with the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp.

The agreement takes effect next year and OLG says employees will remain in their current positions and locations for at least 12 months.

Wednesday in the Ghetto

It was a better night for Kingston Police in the Queen’s student ghetto.

There were large house parties and a handful of noise complaints but there wasn’t a repeat of the rowdiness Tuesday night or on the weekend.

Students Help

Students at Queen’s have donated almost $700 after a woman’s car was damaged during Tuesday night’s rowdy parties in the student ghetto.

The care was surrounded by a large group of students on University Avenue near Johnson Street.  The spoiler was ripped off.

Student Max Moroz organized the “Tilt” online campaign to raise $800 for repairs saying it was an attempt to repair and maintain good relations with the police and the city.

Nut Drive

Engineering Frosh at Queen’s go nuts tonight in an annual tradition to help the Rotary Clubs of Kingston.

They’ll be going door to door from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. selling $7 cans of nuts during the 51st Annual Rotary Nut Drive.

There’s also a rally taking place in the parking lot of the Ambassador Hotel parking lot from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Over the past 50 years the nut drive has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars the Rotary Clubs donate to support numerous organizations that focus on children, youth, and seniors.

Tony’s Today in History

From Tony’s today in history file…

September 10th – 1814…the “St. Lawrence,” the largest warship built during the War of 1812, was launched in Kingston. The three-decker carried 112 guns and 1,000 men.  It never saw action and was decommissioned the following year.
