Woman – Jumper

There should be some tough questions asked about how this can happen twice in two days.

A Kingston woman who tried to take her own life on Monday – tried again yesterday and both incidents have played out in a very public way.

The woman threatened to jump off the Bath Road overpass at Bayridge Drive yesterday.  Members of the public held her until police arrived and she was taken to Kingston General Hospital.

The woman had been rescued from Lake Ontario by firefighters and the Coast Guard on Monday afternoon and was released from hospital after that incident.

Windeler – Degree

It was an emotional day for the recipient of an honorary degree at Queen’s University.

Eric Windeler was recognized for his work on youth mental health.

His son, Jack, was a first year student at Queen’s when he committed suicide in March of 2010.

Eric says his son should have been the one getting his degree.

He has dedicated his life to youth mental health initiatives since his son committed suicide and works full time for the charitable organization he founded called: Jack.org.

Blacks Closing

Six people who work at the Blacks Store at the Cataraqui Centre are losing their jobs with the closing of all 59 Blacks outlets across Canada.

Blacks was bought by Telus in 2009.

Some of the laid-off employees will be offered jobs at Telus or Koodo and others will be offered a severance package.

Man Charged – Twice

Frontenac OPP have charged a 41 year old man from Central Frontenac Township with impaired driving – twice last week.

Police say a car was stopped on Brewer Road in Central Frontenac around 2:50 last Wednesday afternoon.  The driver wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, failed a breath test and was charged with impaired driving.

The same driving was charged with impaired and driving while prohibited after another vehicle was stopped in a RIDE check on Fifth Lake Road last Friday afternoon.

Gregory Lawrence Thompson has a date in court on July 2nd to answer the charges.

Director of Education

The new director of education for the Limestone District School Board comes to Kingston from the Education Quality and Accountability Office.

Debra Rantz was introduced as the new education director yesterday.

Rantz has also been a teacher, department head, vice-principal, principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent with the Renfrew County District School Board.

She’ll replace Brenda Hunter, who is retiring.

Interval House – New Website

Kingston’s emergency shelter for women has a new website that offers information to women who are trying to escape their violent domestic situations.  The new Kingston Interval House website offers tips on how to leave, what you can expect when you arrive at the shelter, and how to cover your tracks for safety.  The new website has been designed for easy use with smart phones, tablets and computers.
